Does a Cheap Temu/eBay SM7B Sound Like a Real SHURE SM7B?

A real SM7B is around $450 and a real SM7dB is around $550. So when I found the SM7B on Temu for around $60 I knew we had to check it out!

You can also find these cheap SM7B’s on eBay for $60 – $120.
Just understand, if you are buying a NEW SM7B for under $300, it’s probably fake.

The Shure SM7B is the most popular microphone to use on YouTube, Podcasts, Live Streaming, Gaming, and in the studio. It’s an all around work-horse microphone that has uses for everything from recording vocals, to drums, guitar, bass, narration, voice-over, podcasting, live streaming, radio, and about a million other things.

It has a wide frequency response of 50Hz – 20kHz
Built-in Bass Rolloff and Presence Boost switches
Internal Air Suspension mounting
Adjustable Yoke Mount

It’s also a very deaf microphone that requires A LOT of gain, at least +60dB for spoken human voice. Because of that, many people also use a Cloudlifter to add another +20dB of clean gain.

There is also the newer Shure SM7dB, which includes a “Cloudlifter” in-line preamp inside the body so you don’t need to purchase one separately.

The Temu (or cheap eBay) version of the SM7B is not built the same way as a real SM7B. It does not have an internal air cushion for the mic capsule, and it is not weighted. Those two things alone have a huge effect on the sound of a real SM7B.

In the video below we will go over the Temu SM7B, take it apart and compare it to the internals of a real SM7B, and hear both the fake Temu SM7B and a real Shure SM7B.

Can the $60 Temu SM7B live up to the Legendary Shure SM7B? Or is it complete garbage and a waste of cash? That is for YOU to decide.
